'Shaking in the leaves'

There are no seats left,
But the one at the end of the table, Uncovered and terrified,
Smiles and nods save this wounded soldier, Or at least my dignity,
Cold sweats and trembling beneath the cloth,
My fingertips grip my knees,
To stop the pins beneath my skin,
The cohort mumbles an inaudible tune,
No sequence, to arrhythmic pounding in my chest,
Excused from the misery,
I die alone in the cubicle,
And return an empty man,
The bullshit confidence fools the assembly,
It even fools me.
